Tax components

What the calculation includes

The estimate sums up three main components for a wage earner:

  • National insurance contribution: 7.8% of gross salary.
  • Tax on ordinary income: 22% after the standard and personal deductions.
  • Bracket tax: a progressive rate on salary above certain thresholds.

Minimum deduction: 46% of salary, max NOK 104,450. Personal deduction: NOK 88,250 (2024 rates).

About this tool

The Norwegian tax calculator gives an estimate of what you keep after income tax as a wage earner. It uses simplified 2024 rates for national insurance (7.9%), bracket tax (progressive) and general-income tax (22% after personal deduction). Good for quick job-offer comparisons, budget planning, or understanding marginal tax. Note: this is a rough estimate. For accurate figures use the Tax Administration’s own calculator, which handles all deductions (commuting, BSU, loan interest, wealth tax etc.). All local.

How to use it

  1. Enter your gross annual salary.
  2. See estimated tax split by component (social, bracket, income).
  3. Check net per year and per month.
  4. Compare effective rate and marginal tax for decisions.

Examples

Typical wage earner
InputNOK 650 000 gross/year
OutputNet ~NOK 450 000/year (~37 500/month), effective tax ~31%
High earner
InputNOK 1 500 000 gross/year
OutputNet ~NOK 880 000/year (~73 000/month), effective tax ~41%
Top marginal rate (over 1,573,500 kr in personal income) is 47.4% (7.9% social + 17.6% bracket + 22% income). So the next 1,000 kr in gross salary nets 526 kr. Use marginal tax when deciding whether extra work or a bonus is worth it.

Common use cases

  • Estimating net pay when negotiating a new job.
  • Budget planning across the year.
  • Seeing whether moving into a new bracket pays off.
  • Calculating marginal tax for extra work or bonus.
  • Comparing Norwegian salary to abroad.

Frequently asked questions

What is trygdeavgift?
Trygdeavgift is the Norwegian National Insurance contribution, similar to social security in other Nordic countries. Rate for wage income is 7.9% (2024) of personal income. Self-employed pay 11.4%, pensioners 5.1%. It applies from the first krone (no threshold) and funds old-age pension, sick pay, disability and child benefit. It is not the same as employer’s contribution paid by the company.
How does bracket tax work?
Bracket tax is progressive tax on personal income above a threshold. 2024 rates: 0% up to 208,050 kr, then 1.7% up to 292,850 kr, 4.0% up to 670,000 kr, 13.6% up to 937,900 kr, 16.6% up to 1,573,500 kr, and 17.6% above. Brackets stack on TOP of social contribution and general-income tax. Only the income WITHIN each bracket is taxed at that rate, not the whole salary, a common misconception.
Why don’t figures fully match the Tax Administration?
The calculator uses simplified maths and only covers the base load: social contribution, bracket tax, and general-income tax with personal deduction. It does NOT handle minstefradrag (should reduce general income before 22%), commuting deduction, debt interest, parental deduction, BSU (housing savings), charity gifts, wealth tax or church tax. Use Skatteetaten’s skatteberegning.no for the final figure. Ours is a reasonable estimate within ±5–10% for typical wage earners without special deductions.
Difference between effective and marginal tax?
Effective tax = total tax / total gross, i.e. average percentage. Marginal tax = tax on the next krone earned, i.e. what you pay on additional income. At 650,000 kr salary effective might be ~31%, while marginal is 34.5% (7.9 + 4.0 + 22 + minstefradrag effect). Marginal is useful when weighing extra work, overtime or bonus. At 1.5M marginal is 47.4%: nearly half a bonus vanishes in tax.

Technical background

Calculation (simplified 2024 for wage earner): (1) social = 7.9% × personal income. (2) bracket tax = sum of (income in bracket × bracket rate) for thresholds 208,050, 292,850, 670,000, 937,900, 1,573,500 kr at rates 0/1.7/4.0/13.6/16.6/17.6%. (3) income tax = 22% × (general income - 88,250 personal deduction). Total = (1) + (2) + (3). General income = personal income here (no minstefradrag or other deductions handled). Effective rate = total/gross × 100. Marginal = rate on last krone. All in-browser. Skatteetaten’s figure will differ due to minstefradrag (≈ 40k lower general income, ≈ 9k less tax), commuting, debt interest, parental deduction, wealth tax etc.
