About the exchange rates

Rates are fetched from frankfurter.dev, based on the reference rates of the European Central Bank (ECB). Rates update on business days around 16:00 CET and may differ from the rate your bank offers.

About this tool

Currency converter between the world’s most common currencies using up-to-date exchange rates. Rates are fetched from open sources (Norges Bank / European Central Bank) and are "mid-market rates", halfway between buy and sell. The actual rate you get at a bank or on a card is typically 1–3 % worse. The tool supports all major currencies (NOK, USD, EUR, GBP, SEK, DKK, JPY, CHF, etc.) and updates the result in real time as you type. Useful for travel, online shopping, bookkeeping and international pricing. The conversion itself runs locally.

How to use it

  1. Pick the source currency (what you want to convert FROM) in the first dropdown.
  2. Enter the amount you want to convert.
  3. Pick the target currency (what you want to convert TO) in the second dropdown.
  4. The result shows immediately using the current mid-market rate.
  5. Click "swap" to reverse direction (e.g. from NOK→USD to USD→NOK).

Examples

Output≈ 540 NOK + duty/shipping
Remember Norway charges VAT + duty for goods above 350 NOK. Expect roughly 25 % extra cost.

Frequently asked questions

What is the "mid-market rate" and why is my bank rate worse?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between bid (buy) and ask (sell) in the FX market. The bank buys currency from you at the bid and sells to you at the ask, keeping the spread as profit. This spread is 1–3 % for common currencies at regular banks and can reach 8–10 % at airport kiosks.
How often are rates updated?
The calculator uses official rates updated once per business day (typically 14:15 CET from Norges Bank / ECB). On weekends and holidays the last available rate is used. Real-time FX rates (updating per second) are available on trading platforms but aren’t needed for most use cases.
Should I use card or cash abroad?
For most countries, card payment (Visa/Mastercard) gives the best rate, around 1–2 % below mid-market plus a small 1–1.75 % fee depending on your bank. Cash exchange at home before travel is usually more expensive. Never choose "DCC" (Dynamic Currency Conversion), paying in your home currency abroad usually costs 3–7 % more.
What about cryptocurrency?
The calculator focuses on fiat currencies (government-issued currencies from central banks). Crypto rates fluctuate by the second and require specialised market data. Use CoinGecko, Coinbase or similar for BTC, ETH etc.

Technical background

Rate sources: Norges Bank publishes daily mid-rates against NOK (~48 currencies) at norges-bank.no; the European Central Bank (ECB) publishes reference rates against EUR (~30 currencies). Cross rates are computed via a common currency: NOK→USD = NOK→EUR × EUR→USD. Historical time series are available from both. Norges Bank’s format is XML/JSON via the data.norges-bank.no/api/data API, documented in the SDMX standard. For real-time data, banks and traders use Reuters, Bloomberg or direct FX broker feeds providing bid/ask every second.
